We can do what you first suggested, however if the kidney has suffered tissue damage, or some form of puncturing, the second procedure would be just as good. You would implant some stem cells with her DNA, and then you would insert them into the kidney. These cells would rapidly take on the same form as the surrounding tissue, effectively regrowing a portion of her kidney.
