Question:

How to brush my horses mane?

My loan horse always manages to get a load of mud in his mane after he has been in the field. I don't want to wash his mane everyday. He has a really thick mane so it is also quite difficult to detangle. I have tryed mane conditioner but it doesnt seem to work. What is the best way to get the mud out without pulling out loads of hair?

  1. comb out his mane before you ride and after you ride then like french braid it or just briad it but be shure to take it out like every two days that will help it not get as muddy

  2. well you don't have to wash his mane everyday. it's not neccessary.

go to your local tack shop and buy a mane/tail comb. it may seem to hurt him, but it doesn't. horses don't have any feeling when you pull their manes.. that's why you pull them :)

also, there are some products you can buy at tack shops that help detangling. i don't use them so i don't know the best brands, but look around and try some out. you'll soon find the one you like to use!

also, what i do when i do put something in the mane- put a line of it down the mane where you want it (or, for me, the section i'm working on at the time) and rub it around the area a little bit. then comb it with the mane/tail comb. it goes for the same for the tail.

    hope this helps! :)

*EDIT* now that i think about it, show sheen is the best. it's what everyone i know uses, and it's worked for them every time. i don't own a horse, but i've tried it on the horses i ride and it worked for me. so i suggest trying show sheen first :)

  3. Just use a brush like yours...

  4. i use detangler and then comb it all out. i love cowboy magic's degangler. it makes the hair sooo silky and i can run my fingers through it.

  5. hmm, i think the best thing to do is do a small step by step process, but the outcome will be really good.

    1) WASH WASH WASH! just get it clean.

    2) a product called "Show Sheen" is AMAZING you spray it on the mane, and this not only detangles it, but also makes the mane silky and shiny. (also it has a good scent)

    3) use a long comb, not a brush, and work from the bottom up  just lightly brushing.

i only have to do this once in awhile for the horses i work with cause it works so nice. and you don't have to wash his mane everyday.

hopes it works for you :)

  6. You start at the bottom, using a comb.  Slowly pick through the tangles and knock out the mud.

A human Vent brush works great too but don't yank it through.  Start at the bottom and work up. This prevents breakage.

Put the Conditioner in your hands and rub through the mane.  Don't wash out.

Baby Oil would work too but since you are in a muddy situation, not sure if that would make it worse.

Cowboy Magic/Mane and Tail Detangler has a silicone in it that helps repel dirt.  It's known for drying out the hair too so you may want to condition first.

    You could also braid it.

Dunno what else to tell ya.

  7. I don't think it's necessary to clean his mane every day.  If you plan on riding and want him to be clean, I'd use a plastic hair brush (like a girl's hair brush with stiff plastic bristles) to remove most of the mud.  Then use a softer brush to get the rest of the dust out.  No need to wash it or put conditioner on it.

Using plastic bristle brushes helps to not pull or break the hairs.  If the mane is tangled, use vegetable oil in the hairs to loosen them.

My horses roll in the mud, too...they like it and it defends them against insects.  I leave it on them unless I am going to ride them.  Good luck.

  8. First I soak it in water then, then I COMB it. If you want I use a stiff old hairbrush and brush it.

  9. With my horse I use a wide tooth comb. I start from the top and work my way to the bottom. If there are a lot of knots in his mane I use Cowboy Magic Detangler and Shine. This really works well. I use it all the time on his mane and tail. It helps to get out all of the knots and helps his mane and tail shine. This is good stuff to use before a show as well.

  10. start brushing it at the bottom and you  could keep it braied while he out in the pasture take it when you ride or leave it in

  11. I learned to take bits of the main and brush it. Though you said that his main is thick. Try applying the conditioner to the roots rather than the hair and see if that works!! hope i helped!!

  12. Invest in some Seven Day Mud-Away. (It contains sillicone)

Wash the mane and comb it out. When it's dry give it a good dousing with the spray ( it really does last for 7 days - even if it rains every day ) comb it through. You will find that the mud brushes out easily next time.

  13. try and use show sheen it works like magic with tangles and it will help keep the mud out. You can find it at any tractor supply Co. When u first use it start to brush at the bottom and then work to the top and renew the spray every two or three days!!!! and try to wash it maybe 3 times a month or more if needed!!!!!!

  14. you should use a curry comb and detangling spray.First spray the detangling spray then brush it out with a curry comb.you have to get horse detangling spray but be sure not to get it in the horse's eyes hop this will help

  15. I would just wash it out. That way you're not trying to pull out dried on chunks of mud. Therefore pulling out less hair. And I'm just lazy like that!
