I need some help with website design. I don't know where to start. I was asked to design a new and better website for the small business I work at. We need to buy the domain name and then design the site. It needs to be able to have videos, photos, and text, as well as a user-friendly format so I can make changes at any point.

How should I start? And good design sites that are not very generic?

  1. Three ways to develop your website:

    1)Using website builder  http://buildit.sitesell.com/salespage11....

    2)Using pre-made graphics rich templates http://boxedart.com/cgi-bin/affiliates/c...

    3)Program/design on your own

  2. You can get a free professional website with Microsoft Office Live Small Business - http://starturl.com/officelive . Currently, MS is offering a free domain name (i.e. yourbusiness.com) for the first year. It has 500mb of storage and no ads. It also has a free online web design tool that allows you to create web pages without coding. You can upload your own website as well.

  3. Make a website easy try--

If you want to go a little deeper try--

    1#KompoZer http://www.kompozer.net/

KompoZer with is free is a WYSIWYG <html> editor. I use this and i am very happy with it.

    5#WYSIWYG forum http://wysifauthoring.informe.com/forum/

  4. Well if it has to be free, you would want to make your pick between one of the many free hosts.

    http://members.freewebs.com/ - freewebs

    http://geocities.yahoo.com/ - geocities

    http://www.weebly.com/ - weebly

    http://www.tripod.lycos.com/ - Tripod

The process of making the site can be simplified by WYSIWYG editors such as dreamweaver. But it would be recommended to learn hand-coding as well, since such editors, or incorrect usage of same, is known to produce invalid code, and bad cross-browser combatility.

You can learn how to hand-code your pages at websites such as http://www.w3schools.com/ and http://www.brugbart.com/

Its recommended to atleast learn HTML combined with CSS, and then forget about all the deprecated attributes and elements used for presentation.

Its also important to validate your code, for this you can use the w3c markup validator at: http://validator.w3.org/ - The W3C Markup Validation Service

Along with the CSS validator at: http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ - CSS Validator

Many website hosts also got their own free templates, as well as their own WYSIWYG editor, the templates may help when aiming to get valid coded pages.
