How to fix a VHS tape?

I have a tape that has about 4 to 6 inches that got wrinkled, and I can't figure out how to wind past that point or smooth out the wrinkles. Any suggestions?

You won't be able to smooth the wrinkles, but you can manually rotate the tape reels to move past the damaged part.

Place the tape label-side down on a table, and use a pair of butter knives to slowly rotate both of the reels.  You want to try to rotate both reels at the same time (and in the same direction, obviously)  You also don't want too much slack along the top where the tape is exposed to the VCR when it's inserted.

There's also a small tab on one side of the tape that is depressed when it is inserted, and unlocks the protective cover so it can swing up.  This way, you can see where the damaged part is, and make sure you've moved past it.

Be careful  Do not touch the tape.  The oil on your fingers will not only mess up the tape, but will also dirty the heads inside the VCR that read the tape.

If it is really bad, you can cut out the piece that is messed up and splice them back together.  You will need a tape repair kit, but as I worked in a video store as a teen, I know it can be done.
