There is a small tree I don't want growing in my backyard right up against the fence and I cannot dig it out by the roots to get rid of it. So instead I used a shovel to chop at its roots. I believe I killed the tree so it will not continue to grow to an enormous height, but it will never go away. Just sit in the yard as a dead sapling. Really killing a black locust tree or a honeylocust tree or any kind of tree is always the same.
