How to learn Vietnamese?

Question

I speak vietnamese and my bf is interested in learning to get closer to my family but every place weve looked at only has english - viet dictionaries that more translate than teach. Does anyone know a good book or place to look for one that is more explanatory?

I don't know where you live. In CA and some other states have Vietnamese course at the Vietnamese Churches. Check it out.

Have you tried renting some Vietnamese DVD with English subtitle.  There are also American songs in Vietnamese.  Check it out.  Also, learn with food and learn how to cook vietnamese cuisine.  Example: Banh Bao.

"rosetta stone" is good . but the best method is this : get a small tape recorder. let him speak into the recorder a sentence in english. you speak into the recorder the most LITERAL translation you can in vn repeat it 3 times slow &1 time in normal speaking voice[ where is the toilet? nha ve sinh o dau ? nha ve sinh o dau ?.... tiep].. give him 10 sentences of his choice a week.. he must listen to this tape the very first thing in the morning and the very last thing at night before sleeping.. in between he can listen to the tape in the car once or twice a day.. at the same time pick up a language tape at the library [ they WILL get one for you ]..or try "rossetta stone".. every week he gets 10 more sentences and he must learn them in one week or the course ends no excuse no second chances... if he is willing to do this for 3 months he'll have a good working knowelge of the language .   co gan het

It depends on where you live.. But there should be a store named My Thanh,or MT

Also in Austin Texas, there are ALOT of viet stores that my mom goes too,so if you happend to live around there you'll see how much.

But if you have extra time on your hands, some viet churches have viet lessons to teach how to speak viet.
