  1. It can be done!  Get ready to go to Home Depot or Lowes

  2. Make sure that you use only stainless steel wireing.  Make sure that it is zinc free.  Not magnetic.

  3. Firstly don't use wood of any kind!!! They are chewers! And the wiring will depend on species of conures you're getting. I've got sun's, maroon-bellies and Patagonians and had to redo the patagonians cage with 3mm (had 1 1/2mm) welded mesh cause they went through the wire like a hot knife through butter.Made a frame with Angle iron bars and covered the back with galvanised steel sheets, and the front, sides and roof covered with welded mesh oh and the door was made out of round bars. Its strong sturdy and wont rust.  Personally I keep my species separate but they can be kept together except when they breed. Each species has a Walk in 2mx2m cage that allows me to interact with them cause they are simply adorable!

  4. Just get galvinized wire - however much you need for as large a cage as you want - you can attach the cut egdges together with zip ties or metal clasps (only use the zip ties if they'll be constructed in a way in which they can't get to them because they WILL chew threw them).

You can take that and set it on top of a wood constructed bottom (if it's on top, they won't be able to reach it as easily to chew it, and it will catch droppings and dropped seed).

Then you can cut out a make shift "door" in the front, and use those plastic report slip binders to place over the cut wire so it's not sharp/exposed (use gorilla glue to make sure the binders stay put).. again, it's possible the birds will chew on these if they can easily get to them.

You can use a bungee cord to keep the door closed outside of feeding/playtime.

  5. The biggest problem with making your own cage is that you can't use wood, as (especially conures) will tear right through that. Meaning you HAVE to use metal, and that metal CANNOT contain any zinc, as it's poisonous to birds.  You also will want to avoid using nuts and bolts in the cage as any smart bird will figure out how to dismantle the cage.

If you are sure you want to make one, and you know how to weld it can be a fun project though!  I would recommend getting grade 304 stainless steel bars for materials. and remember to start off with the frame first.  Try and make at least two of the sides have horizontal bars so they can have fun climbing, and make sure that the bars are not more than 3/4 inches apart.
