Well either rub the object with a strong magnet-this alligns the dipoles. Important rub in same direction.

OR

Wind coil wire around the object, attach to battrey. Allow current to flow. This alligns dipoles.

Object becomes a magnet in each case.

For a permanent magnet, take a piece of soft steel, place it in a North South direction a tap it for about 30 min.  Result is a very weak permanent magnetic.

The other alternative is to make an electromagnet by winding insulated wire around a steel rod and applying a direct current to the ends of the wire.
