How to number streets?

Is there any conventional rules on how streets are numbered? Odd on the left or right while heading north or south, east or west? I hate driving around like an idiot not knowing which lane I will need to be in!

  1. May vary by location,  but normally odd numbers on the west or north sides.

  2. Streets like rt. 70 or rt. 88 for example run north and south. This is because the las tdigit is even. Odd numbered street generally run east to west.

  3. I think this question was more about the actual "address number" (odd/even) on the street, as opposed to the direction of a odd/even highway/route number.

    I checked a few sites:

This one for the state of Georgia: http://gis.state.ga.us/Coordination/GISC...

This one for a county in Washington State:

    http://www.clallam.net/realestate/html/a...

And they BOTH say the same thing:

"Even numbers should be assigned to the right side of streets and odd numbers to the left side as you travel in the direction of increasing address numbers."

    So try this out!

(BTW, street addresses increase according to the distance from a given baseline.  Facts like that are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_numbe...

  4. i know in Chicago streets that run north-south (like Michigan Ave) have even number addresses (if you are driving NORTH) on the right, odd on the left

streets that run east-west will have even number addresses (if you driving EAST) on the left, odd on the right
