Question:

How to remove frozen pedals?

I'm trying to replace my pedals but I can't get them off (I know the R pedal unscrews in the conventional CCW manner and the L pedal unscrews CW) but both seem to be WELDED in place. I've already tried dripping oil into the threads and whacking the end of the wrench that I've got engaged around the pedal stem near the crank but to no avail. Any ideas?

  1. this works every time stand behind your bike turn the pedals so that the on your trying to get off is at a 45 degree angle between facing down and forwward place a wrench un the pedal standing over the back tire stope on the wrench with you foot do this 4 both pedfals

if you lube it and do thin right it will work perfect.

and in the future periodicly losen your pedals so they don't get too tight

  2. Try Liquid Wrench works wonders.

When you put the new ones on put some grease on the threads.

  3. As an absolute LAST RESORT you can use a torch to heat and then cool the cranks to loosen them ( assuming you don't have carbon cranks).  More than likely your cranks and pedal spindles are different metals that heat and shrink at different rates so the heating and cooling will break the bond between them.   You may have to go through this process several times.   The different metals also lend themselves to a process known as "cold welding".  This process may make it impossible to remove the pedals without breaking something.  Using a torch may weaken the cranks and this is why you should only use it as a last resort.  If you use this method and decide to keep using your cranks you must carefully inspect them before and after each ride to make sure there are no small cracks developing.
