Question:

How to save up money?

I will be going into college in September, and I was not planning to work a job along side college because that is soooo much work to do since college is pretty intense and stressful. The only problem is, I have to drive to college every day, and it will cost me about 70$ a week approximately, maybe even more! I only have just under $1000 saved up for gas and expenses, but I need much more than that to get to and from college! I am already planning to sometimes stay overnight at my friend's place instead of driving back home, to save on gas, and I don't think that getting a job is the answer at all sadly just because I know I will stress myself out like mad and probably either quit or worse, drop out of college :( (Unless the job has like 10 hours a week or so) What should I do? Also I suck at saving right now, I buy stuff like every day because I have a credit card and debit card so I can buy whatever I want whenever I want, and I have done that a couple of times this summer..Any personal experiences or ideas for me would be awesome! Thanks!

  1. I could not put it better than JR. Absolutely spot on. Someone close to me went to University and dropped out eventually as he spent all his time and money playing Guitar Hero and not doing any work, ever. Subsequently he came up with many reasons why he was intending to quit. At the end of the day, you can only make so many excuses.

Anyway, what I would recommend is reading a couple of books on personal finance. The first one that springs to mind is "The Richest Many in Babylon". I've read and recommended this a number of times.

  2. You are explaining a lot about yourself in this question. Primarily, you're not demonstrating the self-discipline to even go to college.  College isn't just about class and assignments.  College isn't about specifically learning a single career field.  College isn't about how many credits and what the GPA is.  College is about learning how to manage many fields of responsibility at the same time to make one a more well rounded member of society, including being a good employee.  In order to accomplish this it is imperative that you be able to manage your finances.  Merely making classes is like being able to shift all the gears and reach the brake pedal but never putting gas in the car.  It might work for a while, but sooner or later there's more to driving a car than the operation of the vehicle.  You have to stop and refuel and do maintenance.

If you can't work a part-time job while you go to school, then school is a hobby.  If you know yourself well enough to know that you haven't mastered multitasking you need to get a job to pay your bills and when that sucks bad enough, you'll be mature enough to understand why its important enough to pay your way through college by the labor of your hands (or mind, as the case may be).

The immaturity of kids in our culture is not new.  It is universal and has always been.  But the coddling by the social structure that allows kids to feel some sense of entitlement to a college degree without having to work outside their curriculum is ruining the natural order of motivation that is what made this country great in the first place.

I lived 4 years on a college campus in married student housing.  Two of my sons were born there while I worked graveyard shifts putting my wife through her bachelors degree.  She worked about 20 hours a week and juggled pregnancies, extracurricular activities like Student Senate and Honors College, and having and nurturing newborn children.  She graduated magna *** laude from the honors program while I cobbled together a 25 year old automobile and worked for just over minimum wage.  We were broke and happy.  She went on to have another son and enter a graduate program where she got her MBA while working full time and rearing our boys.  I've worked two jobs all the years of their lives along with coaching baseball and football for them and taking them on tours with their individual rock bands and on skateboarding and ski/snowboarding vacations.  Oh, and by the way, I don't have a single hour of college and because of a strong work ethic have managed to make close to 6 figures for years.

We're still not financially rich, but we have lived comfortably and have found much satisfaction in knowing that our education was only a piece of the puzzle.  Life is a medley of varied experiences and if you allow fear of your responsibilities to keep you from doing what needs to be done to succeed, then you have no right to success.
