How to sell to museums?

I have a 800 year old item passed on to me thru my great grand father. How and where do I sell it?

Can I sell it to museums? Do museums buy stuff or they only take donations?

Museums do buy property, but it's pretty unlikely you could approach them as an individual. If it is really something of value, you should consider an auction house. These are the faq pages for Christies and Sothebys that explain how to sell through them.
