Question:

How to stop while skiing downhill??

I already know about the basic 'wedge' technique on my first time skiing.(spreading my skis at the back and narrowing them in the front) I want to learn the technique where you stop quickly by rapidly turning perpendicular/sideways?? (if that makes sense...)

I have alot of trouble while going downhill because it's just so fast and i want to stop, but the wedge technique doesn't help! Help please!

  1. You need a lesson.  Get a private lesson if you can.  That is the best thing to do.  It's well worth the price.  Skiing isn't one of those things you can learn well from a book or by yourself.

You have to learn to transition from going straight down to perpendicular to the fall line.  Once you can do that then you can do a hockey stop.

I have been skiing for years and still get a lesson once a year to help eliminate bad habits.  It has helped my skiing and I can ski faster and be less tired.

  2. Sounds like the "hockey stop" (named so because it rsembles the way ice skaters and hockey players stop on their skates).

Check the link below on "How to Make a Hockey Stop on Skis".

    Good luck.

  3. start on a hill that is less steep, the bunny hill or similar.  It's a little scary because nearly all your weight is going to be on your downhill leg.  When you make your final turn, put all your weight on the downhill leg and turn your leg a bit more than a normal turn (almost pointing your toes uphill).  It's almost like you are stepping with the back of your heel quickly.

ps get a lesson for half a day, it will help i promise!

  4. Yep.  Lesson.  That is exactly what you will be taught next.

  5. i snowboarded i stop by jumping left or right
