Golf originated in Scotland as a drinking game. Each golfer took a bottle of booze out to the course with them. And they would all take a shot before each hole. And apparently there is exactly 18 shots in I believe a 5th.

Thats why they stopped it at 18 holes. Cause they were out of booze.
