Approximately 4570 million years ago, a supernova explosion created a shock wave and ejected a large quantity of material.  This was scattered, but also condensed by the shock into clouds which collapsed to create the sun (4568.5 million years ago) and the earth (4566 million years ago) and other planets.  One such body impacted the earth 4320 million years ago, and knocked out a large quantity of matter; this became the moon.
