  1. Yeah, that is pretty annoying (the other post).  I used to wait on tables and I know how "those people" can be.  Since I know the hard work and aggravation that is involved in having to put up with people's c**p, stupid questions and thinking that people in the restaurant business are below them just because they are waiting on them...uhg...I always tip 20%.  Even if the service isn't 100% great I still tip 20%, that is how these people make their living and they are only human, they have bad days too.  If the person is extremely rude and does not ever come back to the table and I have to hunt them down to get the bill, that would be the only time I would not leave 20%...but I would never stiff them either.  People who stiff should go to McDonalds or Taco Bell!  Or at least have he balls to let the server know "by the way, I am not going to tip you because I am cheap."  This way the server will already know and doesn't have to kiss butts for no reason!  The person still gets to eat and everyone is happy.

  2. I wouldn't know, I haven't been out to eat since I was 5 (decades ago haha) because it's too expensive.  I did get a gift card recently and since a special occasion is coming up, I want to take my family but I won't have enough to tip.   In my culture it's a compliment to tip.  It should be illegal to require tips anyway.  The way I see it, if you want to call it a tip, then make it that way; where it's a gesture, not obligated.  The waiters get hired to serve.

And those who say well stay home, so the lower income people like myself (I make $10,000 a year and I work 3 part time jobs and am a full time college student from 8am to 5pm m-f) can never go out to enjoy themselves without worrying about paying $20 in tips that could have gone towards gas money (at $4 a litre!).  Waiters act as if they are the only ones who need the money.

Don't assume that those who come in to eat are rich.

  3. I too depended on tips ,so I tend to tip well, but if a tip(gratuity) is added to the bill I will not give anymore (saves me money costs the server).

  4. I have worked in the restaurant industry for over 25 years...I currently own two... I tip exceptionally well,,, 25-100% depending.... I have valued employees who depend on nothing but tips for their subsistence and I know well that they cannot live on 3.37 an hour (their taxes eat all of that).... so when everyone is griping about having to tip..remember, if restaurants paid servers better..it would make me (and all other restaurants) raise prices considerably... So either way, the diner is going to incur the cost. So be human and decent and tip your servers..it is not an easy job and they depend on your kindness.

  5. I used to wait tables also.  I tip a minimum of 20%.... ALWAYS!  If people cant afford to tip then they should order take-out instead.

Tipping is a very sore subject with me.

Please tip your waiters and waitresses~

  6. welll i am a cheap date, and usually i dont have a bill higher than 10$ but anyway no matter where i go, i tip 5$ unless they did something horrendous
