maybe you could call it a ...... bicycle.

one might suggest that a bicycle is just about as efficient as you can get, for a human powered vehicle.

Volkswagen is about to introduce a 2 seat-er carbon fibre car with a tiny 1 cyl engine that gives 235 MPG. It could even be powered by the 2 passengers pedaling. There could be a battery powered electric motor to replace the single cylinder motor, so that one could pre-charge the battery, use it for starting and braking, and have two  passengers charge it up both while traveling and while waiting for the light to change. One might have to charge the battery fully by pedaling to get up long hills.

It could have a solar charger to build up its charge during the day.

This car is moderately light and may not be safe if it can be blown into the path of oncoming traffic by strong wind.
