Question:

Hurt Bird help!?

a few minutes ago we found that my dog had a bird in its mouth we made him drop it but the bird seems like it cant fly and is siting in the corner of our fence. Should I try to help it if so how or should i let nature run its course

  1. you can gently pick it up and put it in a comfortable shoe box with grass and leaves in it for cushioning. Make sure you don't injure it more, it's wings might be broke.  and leave it outside in case it can fly off on it's own.  

    I'd call the human society, or a vet and ask them what you should do.  I always think it is better to help when you can. Unless your trying to save prey from a predator.


  2. This is most likely a baby bird that has not yet learned to fly and this is why your dog was able to catch it.  Check the bird over carefully for wounds or injuries from your dog. If there are some present the bird needs to go to a local wildlife rehab.  If no wounds or injuries found you can replace the bird where your dog took it from, and put it up in a scrub or tree where it will be relatively safe from predators and your dog.  Keep your dog away from this area.  Hopefully, it's parents are nearby watching and will continue to care for their baby.  You can watch from afar, continually to see if the parents are around.  If you are too close they will not come.  Look for a rehab here if you need one:
