Question:

Husband of a Princess...?

In the U.K. I noticed that when The Princess Royal Anne married Mark Phillips in 1973 they did not make him a Prince too...Why is that? When Charles married Diana she became a Princess and did not remain a commoner. Why didn't they make him a Prince too? Men, if you were married to a woman who was Princess wouldn't you want to be a Prince?

  1. The Princess Anne, Princess Royal is the correct style.

    --------------------------------------...

    = Marrying a princess does not make you a prince. If you marry a prince you take the styling of your husband.

    = Prince Michael is the queen's first cousin. His wife is Princess Michael (she doesn't use her own name), and together they are "Their Royal Highness".

    = Diana was Princess of Wales (which was her husband's title) "Princess Diana"  was a name given to her by the media, it is not a proper title.

    ====================================

    It is openly and unapologetically sexist  system. Queen Elizabeth's husband was not automatically prince of the united kingdom. Queen Elizabeth had to issue a "letters of patent" to make him a prince. She only did this on the 10th anniversary of their wedding.

    --------------------------------------...

    In a similar manner, Princess Anne cannot pass the title Prince or Princess to her children, but the children of her brothers are princes and princesses. It is widely believed that Queen Elizabeth offered the peerage title of Earl to Mark Phillips when they were married in 1973, so that he would have a title to pass to his children. The couple refused, believing that there children would be better off without titles.

    ======================

    - The Prince Andrew's children are Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

    - Prince Edward's children are also Prince and Princess, but the couple has requested that the monarchy and the media not use the title. They are referred to as "The Lady Louise Windsor" and "Viscount Severn". The feel that Prince and Princess is a troublesome title to use on a playground. I am not sure that Viscount is any easier. If the parents change their mind, or when the children reach their majority they have the option of using their legal titles of Prince and Princess.

  2. It's all because of the blood line. For ex. when women marry the guy, she gets the guy's last name, not the other way around.

  3. It's because Mr. Phillips refused to be made prince.

  4. 1. It's even worse in the USA, neither Mayte Garcia nor Manuela Testolini became a princess when they married Prince.

    2. And let's see what happens if Queen Latifah ever marries.

    3. And let's not forget Arnold Schwarzeneggar, who married a Kennedy and became a Republican.

  5. No Franco,we don't THINK we have a democracy,We KNOW we do.If it is beyond your comprehension,it would be better not to advertise your ignorance on the subject.

    Captain Mark Phillips was offered a title but,refused it.At the time,he and Princess Anne,thought that that was the best thing to do.He was not very interested in the public appearences that the Royal family have to carry out.

  6. Men who marry titled women do not get any title, whether she's a dame, a baroness, a duchess or a princess. Some untitled men who married princesses were given titles (the first Duke of Fife, Lord Snowdon, and Princess Mary's husband was offered a promotion to marquess in the 1920s). It's because a man does not take his status from his wife. As others have noted, Capt Phillips was offered a peerage but declined.

  7. Men do not marry into titles since titles are passed down the male line,based on the rules of primogeniture,where the eldest son inherits.

    Mark Phillips,with Anne's blessing,turned down all aristocratic titles offered to him.

  8. With all these titles in UK, it is worse than Saudi Arabia. And the funny thing is they think they have democracy !

  9. Men rule in the UK. A prince can marry a citizen, and she'd become a princess. But if a princess marries a citizen, he wouldn't become a prince.

    Sucks, right?

  10. You have no idea what your talking about. Princess Anne was not The Princess Royal.

  11. It ha always been the rule in Britain - and most of Europe - that a woman on marriage automatically shares her husband's rank (so the wife of a duke becomes a duchess, the wife of a king becomes a queen, etc.)  but that a man on marriage does not automatically share his wife's rank.

    This is not as unfair as it sounds. The wife of a duke or king gets a nice-sounding title  but this title doesn't convey any actual power or property; it's what's called a "courtesy title" - a bit of fluff, basically. The title "Duke" or "King* *always* conveyed serious property and political clout. That's why you don't get given it just for marrying someone.

  12. Because Capt Phillips did not want the title.  Diana was actually titled Princess of Wales or Princess Charles of Wales

  13. For a start the Queen did offer Captain Mark Phillips a Earldom when he married Princess Ann in 1973. But Princess Ann didn't want her children to have titles. Remember when Princess Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones she created him the Earl of Snowdon.

    Diana already had a title the prefix "lady" been the daughter of Earl Spencer
