  1. Yes. Erickson.

    Michael John Weaver, M.S.

  2. The American Psychological Association Division of Psychological Hypnosis provided the following definition :"Hypnosis is a procedure during which a health professional or researcher suggests that a client, patient, or subject experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behavior. The hypnotic context is generally established by an induction procedure. Although there are many different hypnotic inductions, most include suggestions for relaxation, calmness, and well-being. Instructions to imagine or think about pleasant experiences are also commonly included in hypnotic inductions. People respond to hypnosis in different ways. Some describe their experience as an altered state of consciousness. Others describe hypnosis as a normal state of focused attention, in which they feel very calm and relaxed. Regardless of how and to what degree they respond, most people describe the experience as very pleasant. Some people are very responsive to hypnotic suggestions and others are less responsive. A person's ability to experience hypnotic suggestions can be inhibited by fears and concerns arising from some common misconceptions. Contrary to some depictions of hypnosis in books, movies or on television, people who have been hypnotized do not lose control over their behavior. They typically remain aware of who they are and where they are, and unless amnesia has been specifically suggested, they usually remember what transpired during hypnosis. Hypnosis makes it easier for people to experience suggestions, but it does not force them to have these experiences."

The basic divisions of a hypnotic induction are relaxation, deepening, suggestion application, and termination.

  3. Yes, it is real. You can go to some hospital and pay for hypnosis and can be cured from every mental desease.

  4. My co worker swears the "Mad Russian" cured her smoking addiction about 10-15 yrs ago...

  5. no, it doesn't work myth busters (a program that's on discovery channel every wednesday) proved today that hypnosis doesn't work!!!

  6. It's "real" in as much as it can happen to some people.  However, it isn't magical.  You can't be made to do something against your nature.  As with many psychological approaches to curing things like smoking, it will only work if you believe it will work.

  7. Hypnosis is embellished greatly in the movies.

    a) You can't put someone under hypnosis who doesn't want to be put under.

    b) A person is only under hypnosis for a limited time. If you hypnotised someone and walked away, they would come out of it on thier own.

    c) The person has to be fairly prone to suggestion to begin with

    d) The person has to have a good imagination.

If you have a large group of people you can usually find 5 or 6 of them who will cluck around like a chicken, or act out weird scenerios. Basically they have fooled themselves into believing they are under hypnosis and that they will do everything they are asked to do. So they do.

Stop smoking and lose weight type hypnosis works by relaxing the person and convincing them that they are under a spell of sorts and will do what the person suggests.

Of course this is just suggestion, and mostly works because the person wants to quit smoking or lose weight enough to try hypnosis. Basically again, they are fooling themselves into believing that they were hypnotised and this will make them quit smoking.

The reality is that the only lasting effect of the hypnosis is the belief that the suggestion will be obeyed.

To get to the point, hypnosis is only real, if you want it to be real.

Technique: Use relaxing music, or sound effects (oceans, rain). Talk to the person in a soothing voice, and get them to relax each part of thier body individually. Have them breath slowly. Make suggestions that their eyes are getting heavy and that they are going into a state of deep relaxation and hypnosis.

  8. Real - yes - but apparently it doesn't work on everyone.
