I love her, but it's weird. I have a hard time talking to her. I tend to get quiet, and I run out of things to talk with her about. I'm eighteen and I feel like I should be able to speak with her like an adult, but we have very little in common now that I'm not ten years old anymore. And she's really busy. She's a "business woman," so she spends hours on her BlackBerry while I sit there awkwardly thinking of the next thing to say. How can I stop the awkwardness? :(

  1. Best way is to do what girls love to do no matter the age.

Set a date for girls only outing. Shopping, nails, movies, lunch etc.

Try to connect on a different level with her. But also allow for her to get to know you and what you are about. You are 18 so talking about schooling, a future goals and plans is very easy to talk about. Before you know it, she will be sharing her memories of what she was doing at your age. And might even be able to be of some good advice-who's to say (being a smart a@@).

I think it is really mature on your part to want to do something so that you and your stepmother can get on that level with each other.

You got a good heart and a strong head!!!

  2. Go see you friends.

  3. It is really hard to be able to communicate with adults when you are at that awkward stage in your life... You just need to sit down and tell your step-mom how you feel and ask her to spend some time with you... Take her to a movie or go shopping with her... Go to the spa or get your nails done.   You will find the older you get the easier it will be to spend time with her and the more you will have in common... The best thing you can do is talk to her, she will understand... I am sure that you will be amazed!  Good luck!! :0)
