My father was from Amalfi in Italy. I would love to visit there but it is so expensive to stay in the hotels. Anyone know of any inexpensive places there or nearby that I can use just to sleep, store my stuff and have a shower for a week or so. I'd be eating out most of the time so don't even need cooking facilities. I would probably take my two children who are 14 and 15.

  1. It depends from the period you want to come here.

Why don' t you come here first and then you can look for some cheap hotels?? Some of your relatives could help you. I think that on internet you would pay much more money than searching the hotel by yourself on the place,.

  2. My brother and his wife stayed at a convent in Rome - it was very inexpensive and they enjoyed the experience so much that a nephew and his wife did the same when they visited. This type of accomodation is available all over Italy.

Near Amalfi, there's Amici di S. Francesco in Maiori. Lungomare Amendola, 41 84010 Maiori (SA) - phone +39 089.877053

Websites with information on convent/monastery stays: www.santasusanna.org, http://www.monasterystays.com/  and http://www.hospites.it/Objects/Home1.asp... The 3rd one is in Italian only but may be the most useful. The 1st seems to list facilities in Rome and further north which won't be particularly useful to you. There may be some information on convent stays in general that's applicable though.

You can also use http://www.ostellionline.org/ to find a hostel (site in Italian).

    1st off you're sooooo lucky!

2nd have you tried hostels or even see if people are willing to rent out rooms to you?

Hope this helps and have an amazing trip!

  4. i have family in Napoli and we usually stay in Sorrento so we can visit family through the day and have a holiday at night. Sorrento has a great nightlife and im a 14yr old girl. Its got a really good culture etc. because italians go there at weekends. Theres plenty of things to do and places to visit and views to see etc. So you'll probably get hooked with the place!

But yeah..theres busses, coaches and trains to amalfi (and i can tell you that is an upper-class place to live compared to Napoli!!) So i suggest you stay in a cheap hotel such as the hotel Ascot..its extremely central..Its not my choice of hotel because its cheap and we usually stay in a better hotel because we go for 2 weeks, we stay in the Grand Hotel Continental.

The hotel ascot has a pool and breakfast and evening meal is provided, which is your food before and after visiting family, but you dont have to eat there.

I also suggest that you research things like: train routes from sorrento, maps, bus routes etc.

I recomend you buy it last minuite like..a few weeks before, because its cheaper. Otherwise, you could also search the internet for apartments..Ive only stayed in an apartment once, and theyre not where they say they are on the internet! so hotels are more trust-worthy.

If you turn this into a family visiting/holiday trip places i recomend you visit are: pompei, capri and vesuvius..but of course you can find many more things to do too! They are just the three i recomend.

Places in sorrento i suggest you go to in sorrento are: the local churches, theyre beautiful, the marina grande you will see a yellow dock/restaurant, The owner is franko (he is our friend) also the dolio inn (which is hard to find, along a tiny alleyway across from davides ice-cream parlor (which i also recomend!) and the english inn - paolo and raffaelo work all day there and they love that place, you'll see it! so pay them a visit :)

So yeah..I dont know if any of this helped and most of this was useless info!

If you want anything answering add some details okay?

    :)
