I am so nervous and scared!?

Question

Yesterday at freshman tryouts the coach told me to come to the varsity tryouts today. There is only one other freshman she also told to come to the varsity tryouts. I am a setter but I haven't run slides, shoots, and other plays like that. I am afraid I will look like an idiot out there. Any advice to make me less nervous?

Are you good?  That's a dumb question or the coach would not have asked you to come out to varsity try outs.  Of course you are good-no believe it!  No one can stop you, give it your all and believe it in your heart that this is where you belong!  Don't concern yourself with the others, only yourself.  Good Luck!

just play hard and with a lot of heart.  you can always learn the plays and obviously since you are new at the school, the coach will understand that maybe you didn't learn those plays from your old coach.  just have a good time.  and play like you always do, that is what got you the invitation.

a similar thing happened to me kinda so i can relate. i was also a setter back in high school. during my sophomore year, the varsity setter didnt make grades so i was pulled up to the varsity level before knowing how to do shoots, slides, or even 1's. our varsity team was the defending league champions so i was incredibly nervous...but then...i found that this nervousness made me play at my peak level. on every single set even at practice i tried by best to make it perfect. having this motivation to prove yourself is a really powerful thing. as i got more comfortable with the team, sadly enough, i found myself not setting as well because i didnt try as hard to prove anything to anyone. but at the end of the season i was able to do all types of sets and run plays and control the pace of play. that season was a great learning experience for me and i improved my skills the most during that year. as a new setter its pretty hard to earn the respect of the older players but once u prove to them that u can perform, you'll be the most charished player there. im kinda rambling but yea...good luck. i really miss volleyball nowadays and wish i could go back to high school just for it. haha...

Just ask the other varsity players and the coach what certain things mean. They'll most likely be glad to help you out. If your coach wanted you to go to the varsity tryouts then you obviously have a lot of talent.

And don't be worried. If you don't make varsity there's still JV and Freshman teams. Good luck!

good thing! if volleyball is your passion then go for it. it will bring out the best in you and even enhance your skills. it pays to be an idiot if you will be the next leila barros (brazil team)

Confidence, confidence, confidence!

Your coach picked YOU to play with the varsity, which is a huge honor. Don't worry or get stressed out; If you don't know what to do, don't be scared to ask for help from the coach and your team mates. Don't worry about looking stupid, because chances are you won't play as well as the varsity team members anyway. Be confident in your own abilities and don't judge yourself unfairly against girls who have been playing longer than you have.
