I found a baby bird?

Question

It was in the middle of the street, it can not fly due to some type of injury to its wing. I would really like to help it. I live in Arkansas and there is no place that I know of that will take the bird. It looks to me like a mocking bird. I tried to get it water through a syringe and it wouldn't open it's mouth. I squeezed the sides very gently and was able to give it a little water. The bird just sits on my chest or on my finger. It can walk. When I picked it up, it was cherping aswell. I have never taken care of a bird and would like some info. Thank you.

That's funny, I found a baby sparrow in my backyard this week.It can't fly but it sure can hop. I caught it and put it in a cage on my patio and a few minutes later it's Mom was on my patio chirping like crazy. I didn't realize she was still feeding him by mouth so I put him back so she could feed him, which you can't do since he was in the street. I would just give him bird seed and water. I called a bird store and the man said they really cannot do anything to fix the broken wing if that is the problem. Is it possible he is a baby that fell out of a nearby nest? Have you noticed any other birds around chirping loudly maybe looking for it?Since we are in the same boat maybe we can both learn something here. I'm just trying to keep the cats away and hopefully they will both mend and fly away.

Are you sure the bird is injured?  If it is simply unable to fly, it may be because the bird is a fledgling.  Baby birds leave the nest (fledge) before they can fly.  It's normal to find them on the ground - they are supposed to be there.

If the bird is an uninjured fledgling, take it back to the area where it was found.  Place it under, or in the low branches of a shrub or bush - and then leave the area, so the parents can return.

Don't worry about the parents rejecting the bird because you touched it.  Birds have a very poor sense of smell - they cannot smell humans.

If the bird is injured, it must be brought to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.  You cannot keep it in your possession, and you should not be attempting to force feed or water.  Forcing water can easily result in the death of the bird.

You can purchase formula that is for birds at your local pet store,. They also sell a special syringe that is used to feed them with. If yoou ask at the pet store they will be glad to show you exactly what to do. Never force the syringe into the birds beak. The bird chirping is a good sign.You should as soon as possible turn the bird over to the humane society so they can properly care for it and turn it back into the wild when it is time.

Hi i took care of a bird and feed it wet dog food, needs a bird cage, water bowl, bird food bowl.. but i hand fed it wet dog food and spooned water into its mouth.. but i know in MD where i live its illegal to take care of a wild animal, and eventually i took it to this wild animal sanctuary to be cared for so you need to look online for a place to take it.

Usally your suppose to take it to a emergency er for animals because of its injury. I was in a simmair situation where we found a cardinal that was attacked by a cat and its wing was all messed up we wanted to keep it but the er people said we wernt allowed to keep it because its wild. When we took it to the er they put it in the emergency room so if i were you i would take it to get it checked out. Good Luck
