Question:

I had a panic attack tonight?

It scared the c**p out of me. I was home alone, working, then I suddenly felt dizzy and my hands began shaking. My heart started to race and my breathing became rapid. I called an ambulance and they confirmed that it was a panic attack. I declined going to the hospital. My stress level has been high: I lost my mother four months ago to breast cancer; I'm in my final year of Grad school, I'm in the process of moving, and I just started a new job. Things are really hectic now. The panic attacked scared me to death! I thought I was dying!

Should I go see my doctor tomorrow? Has this ever happened to anyone?

  1. ive had them for 28 yrs now keep a journal of what you were doing prior to the attack or what you ate or drank find out what your triggers are and avoid themm... mine is caffeine sodas....  they also have some great new drugs for this if you want to go that route  i dont, and remember....  fear is ...... False Ellisions Appering Real.

  2. I've had panic attacks at two points in my life: they appear to be how my body deals with really, really deep depression.  For me, it was my body's way of telling me I needed more help than I had gotten to date, that something needed to change.

You can call your doctor and, if s/he determines that you have, in fact, been having panic attacks, s/he can prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to alleviate the symptoms.  But they will come back again at other difficult times in your life unless you come to understand what they are trying to "tell" you about your situation.

You are going through a lot right now and your response is a completely normal one.  Talk to people who can be there for you, see a therapist if you feel comfortable, and do everything you can to take care of yourself: the panic attacks will subside as you start feeling stronger and more supported.

  3. I had several panic attacks last week for the first time ever.  SCARY!  I didn't go see a doctor (I don't have insurance).  But really the only reason you would need to see your doctor is if you want him/her to prescribe you some Xanax or something to take everyday to help prevent it from happening again.  I think it might be worth it though, to not have to go through the attacks anymore!
