I'd like to get a high-quality video camera for my birthday.

High quality video and sound, adjustable light settings.

That's it. It doesn't need to take great still photos.

How much can I expect to pay for this? What would you specificly recommend?

  1. Canon GL2 - small and light but professional. try e-bay and camera stores. you are looking at $1200 +

You want to just play around, go to Best Buy and get oe of the shelf. not much you can do with it and the pic and sound is not as good buthtye are cheap and cheerfull for the quick video of family and silly stuff.

Just make sure it films on to Mini DV tape. not a disk if you want to get into editing.

  2. I've had great experience using Canon digital cameras. The pictures come out crisp and there is very little shutter lag. Their cameras have a great range in terms of price, allowing you to choose one that's perfect for your specific needs.

If you need a DSLr, you can go for the Canon RebelXT, which is a great value camera. If you need something a bit smaller you can look into the Powershot series. I really liked the S40 before switching to the S50 then to the Canon S1. The Powershot S3 is the newest one. All of these should run you between $100-$250 USD
