On friday, I learned that my 8 year old boy, Carter is very gullable! His friend, Austin, told him that on "sunday," all christians are supposed to worship the sun. ("sun"day, get it?) Yeah, so what my favor is, is will you answer and just put a big "NO!!" I want to show my son, he won't believe my husband or I, and we didn't go to church today, so we couldn't ask there...LOL!! Can you help me out?? Thanks! (oh, and we are christians, and all day he was like "c'mon, we have to worship the sun!") LOL!!! Thanks! (But thankfully, the sun is starting to set, lol)

  3. Hi,

Please tell Carter to pass on to Austin that (in the English language)  all of the days of the week are named after planets or Nordic gods (mythology).

The English week has retained the original planets in the names for Saturday (Saturn), Sunday (Sun), and Monday (Moon). For the four other days, however, the names of Anglo-Saxon or Nordic gods have replaced the Roman gods that gave name to the planets.  Tuesday is named after Tiw, Wednesday is named after Woden, Thursday is named after Thor, and Friday is named after Freya.

So the short answer is No! No sun, moon or Thor worshiping required during the week. ;)

  4. NO!!

  5. No Carter, buddy, Christians aren't supposed to worship the sun on Sunday. Pagans, who were non-Christians, would worship the sun and believed that each day was ruled by a planet. That's why it's called Sunday. Monday was believe to be ruled by the moon, now Christians don't worship the moon do they? No. If you want to think of it as worshiping the sun, think of the son of God, not the one in the sky.

  11. Carter we are suppose to worship and pray to God not worship His things on this Earth. We are to be thankful to Him for things like the Sun and all different things we have in this life!! God Bless you!!

  12. Dear Carter,

Even our best friends can sometimes get confused.  Moms and Dad can even be confused sometimes, though you should trust them more.  They have had more school than your friends, after all.  Most of all, we can trust God.  What He says is true.  God inspired the bible.  That means that He told the various writers through the years EXACTLY what to write.  Every word in the bible is true! Whenever you are confused about what is true or not, I hope you will go to the bible for your answers.

The very first commandment says we are to worship God.  When Moses was talking to the Israelite people, he reminded them in Deuteronly 4:15-19 to be very careful that they did not ever make a stutue of some animal and worship that or look up to the heavens that God made and worship sun, moon or stars that God made.

Instead, just like King David said in Psalm 29, we should give glory to the Lord, our God.  God is powerful.

The sun is only something wonderful that God made.

King David also said in Psalm 57:5, "Be thou exalted, Oh God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above the earth."

All through the bible, we see people worshipping God.  When they did worship the sun or anything or anyone but the One True God, they were punished or scolded or warned to stop.

In Isaiah 42:8, God even says, "I am the Lord: that is my name: and My glory I will not give to another, neither my praise to graven images."

That means that God wants to save all the worship that people can give and have it go only to Him, because He is the true God.  He made everything, even the sun, and He is the one who really deserves the praise and worship. God actually gets angry when people forget or get confused and worship anything other than Him.

Jesus is God's Son.  God wants us to worship Jesus just as we worship God.  God showed us whenever He was angry at the wrong kind or worship.  The wise men asked where Jesus was so that they could go and worship him (Matthew 2:2).  When Jesus was a grown man, children worshipped Him and put palm branches down on the ground to honor and worship Him.  God never scolded that!  You may worship God and Jesus and even the Holy Spirit.  Since Jesus is God, it is very right to worship Him, too.  In fact, Jesus was with God when the world was made!  They made the world together!  It may sound amazing, but it is true.  The bible tells us it is.  The bible also says over and over to not worship anything or anyone but God.

Austin might have been confused, because people did worship the sun.  Some people still do worship the sun.  That doesn't make it right.  God tells us what is right and we can trust Him.  It is right to worship God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  They were there together making the sun and everything else in our world.  Believe God, even if it is sometimes hard to believe others.  He never lies or gets confused.

Sunday got its name because people got confused, just like Austin.  The best thing you can do is to pray for Austin.  Pray, also, that you will have a chance to gently encourage him to go to church and learn more about the God who made the sun and everything else.  God loves Austin, too, and wants Austin to read the bible and learn what God is telling him and you and your parents and everyone else: He is God (the creator, the healer, the forgiver, the helper and so much more) and He deserves ALL of our worship!

I hope this is helpful for you, dear.  God loves you very much and wants you to know what is right.  God is also strong and wise enough to help your parents learn the right things and tell you.  Please honor them and trust them.  God gave them to you for just that reason!

Much love from someone who is praying for you,

    Mrs. J.
