  1. The all time winner bargain compact digital camera is the Canon 7.1 megapixel PowerShot SD1000 [not the IS] 7.1 with an added 2- gig memory card which when set in the manual mode for "Vivid" colors and videos at 30 fps in 320 dpi format provides killer images and videos under low light conditions. It currently sells for $160 at Sears:

    Good luck!

  2. First, depends on if you demand having a brand-spanking-new camera, or will settle for a camera that someone upgraded to a different model and is selling.

If you're willing to go used, by all means, try to find a canon rebel XT on ebay. You'll have good luck finding one around 300$, with just the standard bundled 18-55 lens... and these cameras are truly leaps and bounds ahead of point & shoot- although this isn't the latest of the DSLRs, this will still be a huge huge upgrade for you- both in terms of the kinds of pictures you'll take now with it, and the potential to upgrade and advance as you learn to tinker with it.

Another camera you might be able to get off ebay is a nikon d40, which someone suggested- also, again, a leaps and bound upgrade.

If used isn't really something you're into, canon's point-and-shoot 'powershot' series is a pretty good one. You can get a powershot s5, which is by all means a good camera, for around 300-350$ new.

  3. Canon makes great cameras in your price range. You might also like to check out Fujifilm and Sony.

  4. sony

  5. Canon, of course! Look into Powershots. The SD1100 IS is nice, but probably too expensive for you. Alternatively, I like Casio EXILIM S880s - they're simple and around $250 but have like 7.1 megapixels or something.

  6. I bought a Canon A640 maybe a year and a half ago, and it was in that price range.  I'm very happy with it.

    Strengths:

    Image quality

    Flexibility

    Weaknesses:

Low light photography (not bad, but some others are better).

I would suggest that you do what I did.  Figure out what is important to you in a camera, then read a few reviews to see which cameras fit you best.

  7. I have heard that kodak is pretty good.

  8. I am going tomorrow to buy a Nikon Coolpix L18 camera.  It has 8 megapixels, a 3 inch display screen and 3X optical zoom.  I've been looking for a good camera that's not too expensive and I've decided to get this one.  It's on sale at Target this week for $119.oo.

  9. Depends on the type of camera you want. If you are looking for an ultru-compact (pocket size) then the Canon SD series is the way to go. I noticed the 750 is on sale right now at walmart:

It has scored consistantly well on reviews. The SD850 is what I use as a point and shoot. It has a great LCD and the picture quality is really good for this class of camera. It can be had for around 250.00

At the more affordable range of mid size cameras, the Canon A720 gets great reviews. And the canon Powershot G9 is universally loved at the high end of this class of camera.

For a great starter SLR camera (close to professional level) go for the Nikon D40. Everyone uses this for their knock around DSLR.

  10. Get a canon. Get the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS it cost around $300 it has the newest technology, it really compact and it 10 megapixels!
