I need betta fish facts please!

i just got a betta fish and i don't know lots of facts about them. first how can you tell if it's a boy or girl? and can you breed them? i heard that they can die of a fight. thanks!

  2. This is information you should have gathered BEFORE you got the fish!!

    Male bettas have long fins usually and are very colorful.  You can't keep two males together.  Females generally have shorter fins and aren't as colorful.  Females can be kept singularly or in groups of 3 or more.

    All bettas are tropical fish and must be kept in heated tanks with water in the 78F - 82F range.  The minimum size tank needed for a single betta is 2.5 gallons, but 5 gallons is recommended.

    Bettas should NOT be kept in small, unheated containers or bowls.

    Breeding bettas takes lots of experise, but it can be done.  Most bettas sold in pet shops are captive bred by professional breeders.
