I need help with this equation?

Question

I dont normally do this but I'm seriously stumped

(5x+2)-(7x+1)=4x+2

I tried it and got X=1/8 but when I plugged it in I got different answers

I think you missed the negative sign in there

your equation is the same as

(5x+2) + (-7x-1) = 4x+2

5x-7x + 2-1 = 4x+2

-2x + 1 = 4x+2

(now add 2x to both sides, and subtract 2 from both sides)

1-2 = 4x+2x

-1=6x

x=-1/6

[5x-7x]+[2-1]=4x+2

-2x+1=4x+2

-(2x-1)=4x+2

add -(2x-1) to get:

0=4x+2-(2x-1)

subtract 1

2x=-1

Divide by two

x=-1/2 or -0.5

Something I learned from my first question on yahoo!answers is that one cannot trust the answers given here.

The first two answerers (no disrespect to them) have a TC badge on mathematics, yet they both gave the wrong answers.  Everybody makes mistakes, so you've got to be careful with how much you trust any answer.

The ones who said, "X = -1/6", are correct.  And, if I were somebody else, I wouldn't trust my answer, either.

You missed out the minus sign.
