Hi, can anyone help me with my iron consistency? I hit my 4 iron about 160 yds. on the range, but I only hit it 140 on the course. Help?

Thanks.

  1. Forget the range. What  yardage do you consistently hit a club on the course? You should know to within a couple of yards your average yardage for every club in your bag as well as the distances when you swing the hardest or when you swing below your regular swing speed. Knowing yardages and then practicing shots on the  course leads to consistency in shot making and in scoring as well as enjoyment.

  2. The difference between the range and the course for most golfers is that there is no pressure on the range....we tend to press more on the course....poor shot selection etc.

  3. if your just going to the range and hitting balls aimlessly into a big pasture...then your wasting your time...you have to practice with a purpose...pick targets...and hit to those... or pick specific things in the distance and try to hit online to those targets.  Also, I always hear people say they hit their clubs one distance...then when they get to the course...they're always short.  when hitting a club...you need to focus on how far you carries in the air..that's your real distance.  So if you hit your club 160 yards...how much of that is carry in the air and how much is roll.

Also, to improve consistency on my irons, I've started choking down on the grip a bit..I find I make much better contract like this.  If you watch many of the pro's on TV..you'll see many of them choke down about 1 inch on the grip...worked for me, might work for you as well.

    Good luck.

  4. I have the same problem, hit it well on the range and no as good on the course.  It's a mental thing because on the range you're just hitting balls and on the course you're trying to make good contact with the ball and hit to a spot in the fairway.  Plus on the range you're probably hitting off a tee and on the course you're hitting off the ground, unless of you're playing a par 3.

  5. What ever you are thinking on the range try to take that same thinking process out onto the golf course with you.

    Have a good one...
