Yesterday was my first day of Field Hockey practice. I am extremely sore and I have to go again today. I know the pain will get better once I get used to it but for now, are there any tricks on how to make it more bearable. I can barely stand without my back and top of legs hurting. Its definitely the muscles. I'm taking a shower soon, would hot or cold water be best. I'll take a pain reliever but anything else? I have less than 2 hours to be ready to go

  1. Hot bath is perfect, it helps warming up your muscles, take a panadol and..off you go :)

  2. All good answers above. The whole hot vs. cold question is this: if you need to move around, hot is better because it loosens muscles up and gets them ready to work. If I was getting ready to go to bed and had sore muscles, I would use ice. Ice dulls the nerve endings so that you don't feel the pain so much. It really isn't doing anything other than numbing the pain. You shouldn't ice for more than 15 to 20 minutes tops. After that, you risk damaging skin and nerves.

But yeah, hot before your next work out...ice before bed...and advil or some other ibuprofen to help take the edge off.

  3. Hot shower, take advil, use a good muscle rub afterwards and don't overdo the activity, you have to condition your body to the new exercise regimen.

    Good luck.

  4. I have played field hockey for 24 years and I can recommend you to just rest. You will only make your pain / injuries worse, especially when you take a reliever that works just temporary. It has probably to do with needing to get adjusted again, when you have played last season or if you're new to the sport. Discuss this issue with your trainer/coach. Maybe he/she can adjust your training schedule for today, but the best thing is to skip this training and rest.

  5. Do some mild stretches before and after practice.  Drink plenty of water.

Warm water is best to put on muscle aches.

  6. kneel down in your knees and try to bend backwards. then just kick your legs for a wile
