I am hoping to refurbish donated computers, working or not, and then distribute them to disabled children's charities. however, i need to get people to actually donate some first. I need help, I dont want any publicity, yet, anyway but I really need some systems. Does anyone know how I can go about this?

  1. try a great site called freecycle.

search for them using google or something. They won't in most cases let you actively keep asking for them but they come up so often you could probably use a lot of what is on there.

When you are up and running contact me and I'll happily exchange links with you to my site to allow us to cross advertise.

Also if you need any parts I have a good section.

I wish you all the luck.

I'll keep my eyes open for any myself, where are you based?

  2. First, make sure there isn't already an organization doing something like this in your area. It would be a shame to duplicate the efforts of another organization -- plus, they may have a storage facility and equipment you can use. To find out, call the local United Way and ask if they know of such a program. Also look around on www.google.com

Next, do the disabled children's charities want these computers? You need to talk to them and ask. And will you be available to service these computers in the future? Otherwise, how will these charities get support for these machines?

Where will you store these computers? There are environmental laws that will kick in after a certain number of computers in storage -- efforts similar to yours have found this out the hard way, by getting fined for violating local laws. So check into that as well.

And I'm assuming you will be using open source options -- something like Ubuntu as an operating system, Open Office  Suite for word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software, etc.? Because to use pirated copies of licensed software could bring down the law on these charities.

Once you've got all of the above worked out -- start with asking family and friends for donations of computers they don't want anymore and are willing to donate to your cause. Your family, your neighbors, the co-workers of your family and friends -- that should be enough outreach to get enough computers to start your efforts.

  3. ask british telecom in your area - they are continually upgrading systems and dispensing of old ones

  4. you can get it. try hard till you suceed.

  5. I will donate a good computer to you it has two gigs of ram the os is xp

  6. put an ad on craigslist, your local "Pennysave" or "Big Nickel" (or whatever it is called in your town).  Go go to county auctions and by old stuff really cheap.

Look professional about, have cards made, get a business license and have a location for drop offs.

If you don't look legit, people will think you are scamming them.
