I think my son is rebelling...

Question

my son has very nice dark brown hair. he keeps it short and parted on the side. this is very important for his career. he must look professional. he wants to put BLONDE high lights and spike his hair!!! this is totally against Mc Donald's dress code. i cried and forbade him not to do this!!! i was so upset i started hitting myself to show him how upset i was! ever since he has been hanging out with his BFF, he has been rebellious. my son is 23 and up to now has been a good boy. i think his BFF is ruining him. have any other mothers been through this? thanks in advance.

I don't think the highlights are a problem, as long as they are a natural color (not purple or something). Spikes can be combed down while at work. The McDonald's employees at our local restaurants wear hats. My guess is that if the management is bothered by his hair, they will give him a chance to change it. If he  still refuses to conform to the company rules, there is nothing you can do. In that case, maybe he and McDonald's aren't a good match.  At 23, this is his decision. I don't think it's worth getting so upset that you act this way in front of him.

It's not against McDonald's dress code - my 17 year old son had a purple spiked MOHAWK and he worked at McDonalds - they have to wear a hat anyway.  It's hair, and he's 23 for lord's sake.  Back off - and cut the umbilical cord, mom!  he's a MAN, not a boy!

OMG..he is absolutely headed down the wrong path!! What's next?? Rock and roll?! Wow..you have your work cut out for you woman2. Ground him, spank him..whatever it takes. His lucrative career at McDonalds is far more important than stylish hair! For heaven's sake, how does he expect to move up in the company looking like a freak with hair streaks.

My advice..ground him..no more homemade brownies, and give him an early curfew. Good luck, you'll need it!

Wow! Hitting yourself did not help the situation, I'm sure. That's actually pretty immature, and it seems you have some issues.

Your son is 23 years old. I'm sorry, but he is not a baby anymore. I don't know the situation with his BFF, but the blame shouldn't be placed on him/her.

Bottom-line...he's not a "boy" anymore. He is a 23-year-old man. It's his job, his money, his hair, his life. He's going to do what he chooses and he will pay the consequences if there are any. Times are changing, and people are more open-minded about appearances than they have been in the past.

He is on the drugs! I'm guessing he is smoking cigarettes and drinking strawberry wine! I bet he is out all hours of the night not stumbling in until 10:30 - 11:00 at night. All classic signs of a drugger! He needs an intervention! Let me know when is good for you I will be there. I hear the more people the more apt he is to cave in and confess!

this is out of control!  continue to express yourself by hitting yourself.  he needs to understand that his actions cause dire consequences to not only himself but most importantly, HIS MOTHER!  Limit his curfew, and do not allow him to receive, or make, phone calls after 7 pm.  He needs to get his ducks in a row.  Shame on him!  Also, monitor and badger his BFF when he comes over to hang with your son.  I might even advise that you call Mc Donalds and ask the boss or manager to keep a close eye on your 23 year old baby and his extremely rebellious hair.

its just hair, it grows and flows.....you have bigger things to worry about, tattoos, piercings,,,gangs,,,,gunfights etc.......    in reality its only hair.....

Stop being afraid. It's time to let your son suffer the consequences of his actions, whatever they may be.

The earlier you start allowing kids to feel the effects of their decisions, the less you have to worry. They then learn that it's beneficial to think ahead and make smart decisions as children when you can minimize the damage and trouble they get into. When they grow into adults they already know how to make good decisions because they haven't been shielded from the consequences of their actions.

He's 23. There isn't much you can do to control what he does with his hair. And hitting yourself is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure it didn't help the situation.

If he gets fired it's his own fault. You need to sit back and let him make his own mistakes or he'll never learn.
