Right, this is a standard encryption protocol for wireless networks, and is enabled during the period in which you configure your wireless routers security settings, depending on the level of security you wish to have, upto 128bit i beleive, this will determine the key length generated, you submit some words and the routers config script will generate a key for you to enter when you connect to your wireless router, if you have a wireless router consult the user manual supplied for more information on configuring this for your model type.

No. You want WPA2 for your laptop :). WEP is VERY INSECURE!!!

To answer your question. It all depends on the drivers for your wireless card. Make sure that you install the proper, newest drivers. If you are unsure, give us your laptop brand and model (be as exact as possible, even one letter can make a difference).

Then look in Control Panel / Network Connections (ot something similar - I do not have an English version of Windows). Then right-click on your wireless connection and select properties. Look there for WPA2 (or, if you really do want WEP, it should also be there).

Please be advised - I am doing it from memory and so I might not remember everything correctly (I am using a wired connection - faster and much more secure).

Whatever you choose - protection is a good thing. Even WEP will be able to keep hackers from your computer for a few minutes - see the link I gave you. Good reading :)

UPDATE:

deever88 is right - I have forgotten about a router. You have to setup it so that it uses the encryption you need (WPA2 or WEP). Remember to use a truly random password. Make it as long as possible (you will not have to enter it each time your laptop connects so it is not a problem - just write it on a piece of paper; you will need the password to set up the laptop's wireless card). Make sure that both laptop and router use the same password. After entering it, you can destroy the piece of paper :)
