but my parents wont let me. I'm 15 and theres a sports requirement at my school, but im doing tennis when school starts. I really want to take dance lessons (ballet and jazz) but my parents are against it b/c they say it would be a waste of time. I need a way of convincing them to let me try it w/o being immature or whiney. Any help? Also, would there be any way for me to do pointe eventually? I only want to do dance for recreation, not proffesional btw

  1. Come up with a list of all the GOOD things about dancing. (like, A way to meet new friends, or it's a good way to get active)  Then start looking into taking lessons. Find out about the local studios, what classes you would be in and how much it would cost.  After you pretty much know what place you would go to and what exact classes you want to take then tell your mom.  Show her your list of good things about dancing, tell her what studio you think would be best.  At my studio they let my dad be the handyman for the studio and then we got 1/3 of of tuition.  And BTW you probably would not have a chance to get on pointe.

  2. one thing I have never understood is why many parents think that its a waste of time to dance. What many of them don't realize is that it's really good for you both physically and emotionally. It's a stress outlet for a lot of people and also builds endurance, strength, etc.

You need to explain to your parents why you really want to be a dancer. I can't tell you the reason because I don't know. And ask them why they believe its a waste of time. Once you know the answer to that you may come up with some ideas on how to come back to that.

Pointe? Yes...I would say that you could be on pointe eventually. There is one girl who started as a sophomore at my studio and got her pointe shoes during her junior year of high school. You just have to realize that you're going to have to work hard for that.

  3. Well I've been dancing for 12 years, and I will tell you that starting at 15 would be difficult. If you want to do ballet, there is a lot of technique you need to catch up on. Before you can do pointe, you have to be at a certain level in your dance experience and be confident on pointe. Dance is extremely fun, though, and a wonderful art. I think you could manage. =)

It definitely would not be a waste of time. Dance helps you become more confident with your body and helps you tighten your muscles, etc.

    Good luck! :D
