  1. It was formed by receding glaciers. It used to be in Queenston and has eroded to where it is now. The earliest settlers were the neutral people, a peacfull nature loving tribe. They were driven out by the more violent Iroquois people. The first european to write about seeing it was louis Hennepin who visited the falls in 1678. The area and surrounding areas are beautiful. You can get all kinds of bookks about the area on amazon.com.

  2. You'll have to wikipedia it for who discovered it - I can't remember....

It originally didn't have a purpose.  It was formed by glaciers.

Now, we use it for hydro electric power.

I don't think it's possible to accurately weigh Niagara Falls....  but you can find the height and the volume of water that passes through it on wikipedia.

By the way - it's a nice, safe and clean area in these parts.

  3. I'm from a small town north of NF, Grimsby.

Google history of Niagara Falls and you'll get all the info.

  4. You need to find Pierre Berton's book about Niagara Falls - it is called "Niagara:  A History of the Falls".   I read it several years ago, and it is tedious going in places but it will give you a wealth of information about the falls.  Here are a couple of interesting links.

  5. The person who discovered the falls was Father Louis Hennepin in december 1678. Its purpose is jsut like any other water fall excpet this one generates a extremly large portion of energy for he north east using the hydro electric power plants and pumps. Its height is 176 feet and the water flows 150,000 Gallons per second. But that can vary based on the time of year becuase some of the water is diverted to the power plants and in the summer its that much in the winter at night its less.
