Passing

By Cynthia S.

I sit at your bedside

in this small room

noting your hand

is cool in mine.

The room is warm,

humid, and this

chair gives reality

to my discomfort.

I know you hear me.

your fingers with

gentlest pressure

try to console me.

You whisper “thank you”

then the room, too small

too warm, shrinks

you leave with a smile.

  1. You have captured the essence of the last moment of life. I can relate to this scene very well and have just shed a few tears.

  2. good.

  3. OMG -- wonderful!  You captured the immense grief and joy as one you love, living in a crippled body, goes into the next phase of life... free of the mortal body that had him bound.

My stomach dropped when I read this.  My first reaction on hearing of the death of my father was, "Oh good, he doesn't have to suffer any more."  The pain and sorrow hit me later.

He too "left with a smile" -- in the coffin the mortician had given Dad his famous grin.

    T.

  4. wow.....great.....can't say another word....you put smile on my lips....sealed with a kiss....

  5. You have taken us into the realm of losing a loved one, but holding onto the love.  Thank you.

  6. that was good. "You leave with a smile" Loved it!
