  1. For .mov files, Launch iMovie and drag the files to the timeline or clips pane. This assumes they are standard definition video. If they are high definition, you need to do a custom install with the MacOSX system discs and install the Apple Intermediate Codec - it is a QuickTime component.

For MPG files, those need to be converted to .mov or .mp4 files using StreamClip... Go to apple.com, the Downloads area, search for StreamClip... download and install... it is free.

  2. imovie only downloads movies from certain video cameras. it will allow Cannon and Panasonic, but will not allow Sony.

  3. press the square videocorder button. It will go blue for a while then press load.

  4. You can't upload movies into iMovie.  You have to capture them via Firewire from a dv tape camcorder using File > Import from Camera.

If you have a newer AVCHD camcorder or a video camera that records to miniDVD, flash memory, or hard disc drive (HDD), you have to get your videos to your hard drive using the technique outlined in your owner's manual.  You must then put the videos in your Movies folder.

Once the videos are in the Movies folder, you can use File > Import Movies to open the media manager and import photos, videos, and other files for use in iMovie.
