  1. yeah, i mean if player 3 and 4 only lose their match play holes by say 1 stroke, but when they did win they won by many more strokes. The strokes don't matter in match play, winning 1 hole is 1 hole. but if you count the strokes it would matter overall. obviously the other players 1 and 2 would have to finish the hole and not just concede it to count up their total strokes.

  2. I'm assuming by "better-ball" you mean "Four-ball match play". This is defined in the rules as "A match in which two players play their better ball against the better ball of two other players".

I can't think of a situation in which one side would win a hole when each individual player on that side either lost or halved the hole.

It is against the rules of golf to mix stroke play and match play in the same round. The rules are very different between the forms of play. (Rule 33-1)

For example, in match play you can concede a putt to your opponent. In stroke play, you must hole out on every hole.

Another example: In stroke play, if your ball hits your "fellow competitor", it is considered a "rub of the green", and you just play the ball as it lies. (assuming it wasn't a putt)

In match play, if the ball hits your competitor, you have the option to cancel the stroke and replay it.
