IV-where is the best location?

I know this may seem a little silly, but please help me.

I am having surgery in a few days and I saw my family yesterday and they all said not to get the IV in my hand, but in the area where they take blood from (I don't know the medical name for that area). I have had many IV's before, but it really didn't hurt that bad in my hand. I don't understand why they are saying to get it in the other area. I asked them and they all got mad and thought I was being rude questioning them, when I'm just really nervous because I've never had surgery like this before.

I know it hurts in your hand but wouldn't it hurt worse in your arm like that? I mean when you bend it and stuff? I'm so confused but if they're right, I want to make sure I ask the nurse to put it there. I've never even had a choice before, I thought they just put it where they put it and that's that.

If anyone can please shed some light on this issue, I would greatly appreciate it! Why would an IV hurt less in the area they take blood from than in the back of your hand? And does it really hurt less?

I have only ever had and IV in my hand. I think they put it there so you can move more easily than if it were in your arm. If you still have questions. ask your nurse. I am sure she would help you, because that is her job. :D Good luck with your surgery!

Your family are they in the medical field.  If they are not, tell them you are having the IV where you want.  

Best person to ask is the nurses they deal with patients IVs every day.
