I'm trying to help a family member do the family tree.. and he has done most but obviously wants you get so far back it gets harder. But this is even harder because there is a large chunk of my family that are Icelandic (way back when and probably still have family over there.. distant cousins sort of thing.. thats why we are researching) and I can't look up any of the names because it will show me the name but when i click on it the site obviously is all in Icelandic.. I cannot speak Icelandic.. so my question.. can someone find me a really good Icelandic to English translator online for free and no sign ups or anything.. it's hard to go back any further (we're back to about 1800 something now) because of the language problem.. thanks

  1. Iceland genealogy research is among the best because the country is so small and isolated. Since most Icelanders speak English well, why don't you access a website like iceland.org and take it from there? Of interest: There is a genetic research program underway called Íslendingabók which will eventually map every Icelander's genetic code. Apparently they have discovered that originally most Icelandic men were of Nordic background and most Icelandic women were Celtic. Makes you wonder if the marauding Vikings brought back more than gold from the Co. Wicklow!
