Icey air conditioner?

its over 100 degrees outside and my ac was on(low) i heard this cracking inside ther filter so i shut it off opened it... theres a 1/4 inch layer of ice in there it had rained lastnight but its 95-102 degrees lol any ideas what happened/ what to do

  1. Where da monkey do you live ? Florida ? anyways did you run it all night while it rained? which the moisture in the air condensed around the filter or behind it freezing up, once you get a little bit of ice it is easy for it to keep building up on it, anyways another option is that something broke, if all the freon charge leaked out the ice would melt after running a certain amount of time and your AC wouldn't be cold anymore, ya need to defrost anyways by turning it off letting it melt, or cleaning with water, as long as it drains properly. It being dirty and dusty also allows ice to form easier.


  2. Moisture condensed and froze onto the evaporator. Next time it happens, run the fan (without the compressor/air conditioning function) to defrost the ice and then turn on the A/C again.
