Ichiro Suzuki?

Why do people only call Ichiro, Ichiro? Its Also the same on his Jersey. Why not by his full name? Isn't his full name Ichiro Suzuki?

It started when he was in Japan. When he played for the Orix Blue Wave, he was known as Ichiro and had it on the back on his jersey there. It followed him to the States.

People do call him Ichiro Suzuki, but when he came into MLB he asked if he can have his first name on the back of his jersey because in Japan that's what they do. Daisuke Matsuzaka however decided to have his last name on the back of the road Sox jersey. It's just what Ichiro's choice to put his first name on the back of his jersey.

In Japan, you are referred to as only one name or they put your name together.

The Japanese company Nintendo, owns the Seattle Mariners. They want to respect Japanese Grammar and leave his whole name as one.

That is why you only see his first name on his jersey and not his last name.

Suzuki is a very common Japanese name, and he wanted more individual recognition.

how many Cher's are there? well, many, but when you hear "Cher" there is really only one. And "Elvis", same thing. "Madonna", too...some figures can get by with only one name and everyone knows who they are (whether one likes them or not). Ichiro is the same--all you have to say is "Ichiro" and everyone knows who you are talking about. That said, he can wear anything he wants on his jersey.

i believe that asian names are backwards so even though it looks like his first name is Ichiro, its actually his last name. the reason everyone calls him Ichiro is because it LOOKS like its his first name.
