Question:

Ick. Soft Paws...anyone else?

I used to have a cat who was too old for declawing. I therefore used Soft Paws but unfortunately found that several times the adhesive would stick to the claw a little too well and become firmly lodged. The result was a claw that didn't shed, a Soft Paw that didn't pop off, and an overgrown claw imbedded in my cat's paw pad. It was horrifically painful for my cat to cut and peel the Soft Paw off. I'm wondering if this has happened to other users (my vet said it wasn't uncommon) and how you guys solved the problem. Or is there no way?

  1. Are you aware that though claws will shed this does NOT make them shorter?  A cat's nail is like an onion and when the outermost layer sheds the nail stays the same length.  Nails HAVE to be trimmed.  I can't believe you let the claws go so long that the nail actually imbedded into the paw pad!!  That poor cat!

Trimming nails is NOT that difficult and if you do so regularly there's no reason to put Soft Paws on the cat.  If you're worried about the cat scratching on your furniture just give your cat alternate surfaces it CAN scratch on - posts, sisal scratchers you can hang on doorknobs.

As to declawing there's NO age that it's OK to do it to a cat.  Declawing isn't declawing at all - it's deTOEing - the surgical removal of the first joint of every toe.  If you think that's not a cruel thing to do - would you do that to yourself?  It's such a painful and barbaric thing to do to a cat that it's actually illegal in many countries and hopefully will be someday everywhere.

Edit: $10K in damages from a cat? LOL!!  As if!!!  You're a waste of time - not sure why I even bothered to reply to this post.

  2. This happened to my cat too!  It was horrible and I was wracked with guilt.  I am totally against declawing at any age, and thought these would be better (obviously I was wrong).  I found no way to fix this problem, and was not willing to try them again.  I am resigned to the fact that he is a cat and they scratch.  I bought him a sisal rope mat, which he loves to scratch on (better that than my couch).
