Question:

Ideas for constipated cat?

My cat was constipated, and I took him to the vet. The vet gave him 2 enemas, and sent him home, 9 days ago. Since then, I've noticed my cat is still not acting right... no appetite, lethargic, and can't jump. I've also noticed thathe's having difficulty walking on tile. I haven't seen him produce any bowel movements, but we have a multiple cat household, so it's difficult to tell. I talked to the vet again, and he said it was too soon for another e***a, and told me to watch his bowels. I have been forcing water into him, using a dropper. I also have Metamucil to give him, but am concerned that if I give that to him, with him being dehydrated, it will only block him up more. Any suggestions?

  1. See another vet.  Perhaps you've simply left out a lot of detail, but this is what I'd want to experience:

    1.  The vet asks you a lot of questions about the cat's diet and habits to find out WHY it's constipated and how long it's been going on.

    2.  The vet examines the cat's diet and eating habits for clues.

    3.  The vet suggests remedies or medications or even foods that can assist with constipation, rather than just emptying him out once or twice.

I don't know about Metamucil.  My advice would be to first read this article and follow any suggestions in it.  This is an excellent site with excellent advice:  http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac...

    Consider offering slippery elm:  http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?ac...

Consider changing your kitty's diet to something (perhaps) healthier.  This would be either raw meat or a grainless canned food.  Purchased at a pet store rather than the grocery store.

I would also ask myself if he might have gotten into anything that caused this.  If that seems likely, then it's possible that this will clear up in time.

I would also call the vet - or possibly get another opinion from another vet - and mention the symptoms.  They don't sound good to me and I don't know if just being constipated would account for them.  But I would be quite worried and I'd want a vet to take me seriously.  It sounds like yours is just throwing placebos at you.

  2. Geez, I am sorry you guys are going through this.  No fun at all!!!  :(

My sisters cat had something called mega colon.  It was literally a pain in the butt for the rest of her kitty's life. I am NOT a vet but I would ask about that.

I would also be VERY concerned that he has no relief after 9days.

I would call another VET for a second opinion right away.  If he is not getting enough fluids he may need to be on IVs until this is under control.

    Good Luck.

  3. My cat had this problem.  Try feeding him more wet food, there is more water in it.  Give him a little milk, yes it can be bad for cats but it helps them go to the bathroom too.  Also there is a product called laxatone that you can get at your vets, it is a jelly you feed your cat that helps to soften his stools.

  4. Try a different vets and get second and maybe even third opinions!!!

    Hope this helps :]

  5. give him a large dose of laxatone (hairball remedy)...you can also feed him canned food.

  6. I think you should get a second vet's opinion! It sounds like something more going on than just constipation. These other symptoms sound serious!

  7. Try giving him soft cat food instead of dry.

  8. He may just not be used to the medicine and he might be a little off, or he could be taking so much medication, that he's being drugged.  But I think you should just keep a close eye on him, and take him to the vet immediately if something happens, like he stops breathing, stops moving, falls over and doesn't get back up, etc.  I hope he gets better soon.

  9. best to just give him water that way u know he wont be dehydrated if u notice that he still hasnt gone to the toilet within the next 5 days contact the vet again and say u want some1 to look at him as u know yr cat well ,also look out for any blood if hes constipated he may push too much and make his bum bleed, try feeding him tuna in brine take out most of the brine just leave a tiny amount  in with the tuna it acts like a lubicant for them  the only thing u can do is just to keep an eye on it good luck
