Ideas on helping the world...?

Hi, recently I made a huge desision to impact the world around me... too bad it didn't happen sooner. but as of right now I am an 18 year old getting ready to start college in the fall. I'm supporting a 5 year old child threw a compassion international sponsorship. and I go with my church to winter patrol (an organization that helps feed the homeless in winter) I would love to start volentering at a homeless shelter around the st louis, mo area, (where I'm from) hababitat for humanity... ect. I simply just don't know where to start, please help!

any other things i could be over looking would be nice to add, also.

this isn't just some stupid thing to make myself look better or something like that, everyone needs to do their part for the world and compassion changes your life and those you show it to. =))

I want to be a person full of compassion and helps everyone around me i can, please give me ideas and links =))

I think what you are doing is very commendable.  Check out VolunteerMatch.org to find out what organizations around you are seeking volunteers and contact them about upcoming events, fundraisers, etc.  Often many organizations welcome any volunteer help you may be able to provide because many are non-profit.

You can also check out the United Way (www.liveunited.org) to find out about local nonprofits in your area that are currently seeking volunteer help.
