how can they make diving pools thats go down to 12 and 13 feet?

    I believe it's because the water table in florida.  Your basement would be flooded on a regular basis.

  3. believe it or not some houses DO have basements - just mot often as it's really not safe and you'd better have a darned good sump pump.  the difference is with the pool - while the basics are the same as a basement -- the water weight & pressure keep the walls from caving into themselves.  also since houses here are built UP there isn't as much sand as one would think normally.  some have to get as much "fill (aka real dirt)" as the cost of the land itself. before they can built it has to be made more stable so in essence they are just building up around the top of the pool - the most apt to have the weight crushing in.
