if or when novak keeps on winning tourneys and become no.1 and become more mature (mature meaning something like federer. quiet, less emotional, something like that),

Do you think you would start complaining again of how boring tennis is because its always djokovic winning? Why?

about the mature thing, hes still 20 going 21 this year so i think his behaviour will be different (maybe ummm... more tamed) when he gets older.

  1. Based on the compressed clay schedule this year, I see Djokovic taking over the #2 spot this year.  I think he and Nadal will trade off 2 &3 for a while in 2008 and 2009.  Not sure about overtaking Federer just yet.   It all depends on how far Federer gets in upcoming tournaments.

As for maturity, I'm not sure it's a valid question to ask at this point. He is 20 years old and the #3 tennis player in the world.  I would suggest the effort and discipline it takes to play at that level and continue to work toward a goal shows a level of maturity not readily seen in most 20 year olds.   To compare him to Federer or Nadal who have been in the public eye far longer, and have had time to make their mistakes (and correct them) is also unfair.  Federer was far more emotional on the court in his early years than he is today.  Call it the exuberence of youth, a lack of emotional maturity, or Nole showing his natural personality on the court (McEnroe and Connors were also known for their  "exuberence" throughout their careers).  I don't have issue with his behavior on the court.  I think he is learning as he goes (and got thrust into the limelight pretty quickly last year), and we will see changes in him as his career progresses.

His mental toughness right now is questionable.  He has retired from matches that a more experienced player would have worked through.  The typical dizziness and lack of energy he has experienced on the court could be a reaction to the pressure of being in a big match and not being able to get it together.  I have seen Djokovic rally successfully, and I have watched him lose gracefully, so to claim it is common for him would also be false (particularly since the most recent sore throat was strep throat, and accompanied by the typical fever which causes dizziness and saps your energy).  I also see him learning to rally under pressure and fight his way out of tough situations.  He is not accustomed to the pressure that comes from being expected to win, and needs some time to figure it out.

I think Djokovic is rising at a time when the dominance of tennis by 1 or 2 players is at an end. Federer has shown he is beatable on surfaces other than clay, and while he will continue to be a top player for several more years, he may not be #1 for all of them.  Nadal has been challlenged on clay several times (blister not withstanding), and has not improved on other surfaces as much as needed to remain dominant for long.  Young and/or up and coming players such as Tsonga, Murray, Querry, Wawrinka, and Tipsarevic are knocking at the door of the old guard.  Roddick has shown his mettle recently and is putting up a good 2008 season (hopefully his recent injury heals soon) as is Davydenko.

I don't think tennis with Djokovic will be boring because he will not be the only one in the hunt.  The gap between the top players and the also-rans is closing.  I see a return to the tennis of a decade ago when Sampras had competition from the likes of Agassi, Courrier, Becker, and Chang and the #1 seed was not a given from week to week.

PS Not all Gemini's are trouble makers... we just like to have a bit of fun.

  2. We hope he matures sooner. Otherwise, he should let his Dad play at the moment and wait till he is ready for the big games. The physical and mental demands of the ATP simply does not favor people who can't handle the pressure

  3. I don't think djoko will ever mature.

He's a Gemini they like to play and

    cause upsets.

Then they take the ball and go home.

Every time he thinks he might loose he gets a sicko.

Who ever heard of any-one not playing because they have a sore throat.

    Mummies boy.

  4. maybe... getting more mature is part of pro tennis...

  5. Novak Djokovic will never be #1 never mind #2 !!!

  6. I'll propably stop watching tennis if Djokovic becomes #1, I don't like him... anyway, I don't think any one will be like Federer and his dominance.

  7. Maybe we need to wait until Novak has 25 titles, 7 GS, 100 consecutive weeks at no. 1 (these are not even half of Roger's records) before asking if the Federer scenario will also apply to him.

Besides, I was never bored of Roger's dominance because his game as well as person is beautiful! No complaints here.

  8. He doesn't have to mature, I like him the way he is. Don't forget that Nole and Nadal are both Geminis, and it's what makes them entertaining, what zodiac sign is xno1rafafanx?? Just curious.

  9. Some people will complain if Dokovic dominates others won't. It's just the way of the world no matter what you do some people will like you some people won't.

It takes great deal of maturity to understand that people are different. Personalities will always vary. If you think that everyone has to act like Federer to be considered mature then it is time to question your own maturity.

Tennis is a sport that rewards mental, emotional, and physical maturity. Just look at the likes of Monfils, Gasquet, and Murray. Guys who are slightly older in age but far less successful than Djokovic.

It's funny that this is a question about maturity yet there's a bunch of answers with put downs and name calling.

  10. I think federer has a solid 3-4 years left in him where he will play at the top(maybe not #1, but top 5), and nadal is only 21 so he will be up there for awhile.  It will be less boring since before it was only Federer vs Nadal winning everything, but now there would be 3 people contending every Grand Slam.  That will make it a little less predictable than knowing Federer or Nadal would win the GS.  Not to mention, there are some other young'ns coming up that can cause trouble.  Should be a little more exciting!

  11. Yes,that  always  happens,if Djocovic starts  winning a  lot

people  will  get  tired  and  root for a  younger  rival

  12. The crowd always cheers for the outsider. It's like that.Look at the AO Open this year.Everybody was cheering for Tsonga simply because Novak was the favourite to win the title. The big names got to handle the pressure if they wanna stay at the top.

  13. Novak is an overly ambitious moron who has pulled every trick in the book to get into the top 5, and know that he's there (and its easier to perform with confidence when you're in the upper rankings) he wants people to believe that he's a fantastic player and a great sportsman - no way. He has retired from matches after being totally dominated because he can't bear to lose, especially against close rivals. When Monfils was leading against him at the US Open a few years ago, he faked an injury and got a long time-out, and then Monfils was put off his game and lost - one of Novak's master plans to reach the top; he did this so much as a rising junior. He makes stupid expressions after losing points to make people (and his opponent) think that he's just goofing around and that's why he lost the point. You never know if he's going to fake an injury or retire when losing against certain opponents (such as Rafa) and that makes watching him unpleasant. Roger and Rafa are good sportsmen with good hearts. Novak is a lousy personality and an arrogant fool.

  14. I totally agree with Lolo M....if this idiot gets to #1...I will have to find the tournaments he is not participating in...and watch those.  He is a creep.  I doubt maturity will help him. The tennis ranking is a number...social ranking demands class, good sportsmanship, manners and humility.  Jerkoquit can't even buy these will all his new-found $$.

He is a complete and utter bore!!!

  15. i hate him and his attitude i hope he will not overtake rafa and roger, he and ana both are boring, i like jelena, i want jelena and rafa to become no 1
