  1. all I know is that in amateur boxing its illegal to wrap in between your knuckles

  2. Sammy had some good points in his email.  What the Trinidad camp would do is apply tape over the knuckles.  When you are wrapping a hand for a fight, here is the LEGAL way to do it.

2 rolls of gauze per hand.  1 roll is layered back and forth to make what is called a "knuckle pad"  Start around the wrist, go around the thumb, around the knuckles, and do a criss cross over the back of the hand.  Then place the knuckle pad over the knuckles and wrap around that with the gauze and then end around the wrist.

After you have used the 2 rolls of gauze (one wrapping and one knuckle pad), use athletic tape.  Tear about 5" strips and place them between the fingers.  Then wrap around the hand and wrist.  The thing is that it is ILLEGAL to wrap around the knuckles.  That makes the wrap very hard, almost cast like.  The tape must be below the knuckles.

What Trinidad's camp was doing was applying the knuckle pad and heavily wrapping it with tape, then wrapping the gauze around the area that was taped so you couldn't tell by looking at it.  It was very illegal and very dangerous.  It wasn't until his fight with Bernard Hopkins that it was detected by Hopkins cornerman Nazim Richardson.  When his hand was inspected by the commission, they said it was very hard.

The point of gauzing hands is to protect the hand, not injure the opponent.

  3. It wasn't his actual hand-wraps that were illegal. It was the fact that he ( secretly ) applied so much tape and gauze.

Basically, all hand wraps do anyway is protect your hand and stop you from hurting your wrist or thumb. They don't really hep you to win a fight or anything.

    ADVICE AND TIPS

If your handwraps don't feel right, do them over.

Proper tightness of handwraps is important. Wraps should be tight enough to stay firmly in place, but not too tight or they will cut off your circulation. It takes practice.

Handwraps have a top and bottom. Some handwraps are clearly marked "This Side Down". The reason is that the Velcro should be face up when finished. If you started with the wrong side down is no big deal. On the last step around the wrist, flip(twist) the wraps over.

Handwraps can be machine washed. Hang up to dry. Handwraps get tangled when washed in a machine. If needed, buy a special handwrap wash bag or nylon bag.

Depending on how much you sweat, it is suggested to roll the handwraps back up when finished with your workout.

If you work out several times a week, buy a couple pairs of handwraps.

For smaller hands, avoid wrapping too many times around the palm, because the handwraps will bunch up. For very small hands, you might need to include a couple figure 8's and extra times around the wrist.

Most sporting goods stores sell handwraps, but usually are the short versions, only good for small hands.

Wrapping your hands looks to be very easy... until you try it for the first time. With practice, you will figure it out.
